LA JOLLA, Calif. --With less than 72 hours after arriving from a six-hour bus ride, the LMU men's water polo team was back on the road to La Jolla, to face rival and 14th-ranked UC San Diego. The Tritons used timely extra-man goal and a strong second half for an 11-7 win in Western Water Polo Association play on Wednesday night.
LMU (5-5, 0-1) held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 but saw UCSD (6-6, 1-0) take advantage in the second half, including a 4-1 edge in the third quarter to pull away. Tied at 5-5, UCSD scored four straight, including two 6-on-5 goals and a five-meter goal.
John Mikuzis had a pair of goals for the Lions.
LMU returns home to face newly crowned No. 1 UCLA on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 1 pm. The game benefits men's water polo's Lions Athletic Fund.
