BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The LMU softball team opened 2013 Pacific Coast Softball Conference play with a split at CSU Bakersfield, dropping game one, 6-2, before earning a 7-0 shutout in the nightcap.

Rebounding from a rough start in the opener, freshman pitcher Sydney Gouveia recorded 12 strikeouts and got ample support up and down the lineup as the Lions earned their seventh shutout of the season.

Gouveia (9-2) lasted just 0.1 innings in the first game of the day as she struggled to settle in early. She issued a leadoff walk followed by a strikeout, but then gave up a single, two home runs and another walk before being relieved by Dana Waldusky.

The senior fanned three and scattered five hits for just one run over the ensuing 5.2 innings, but the Lions battery managed just six hits and two runs, unable to climb out of the early 5-0 hole.

Stephanie Maciel went 2-for-3 while Olivia Alvarez's two-run home run in the fourth gave LMU its only runs in the game. Bakersfield's Kelsie Monroe improved to 4-9 on the year with the nine-strikeout, complete-game victory.

The nightcap match-up was a whole different story s Gouveia fanned a dozen, issued zero walks and allowed just three hits, all singles, in seven complete scoreless innings.

At the plate, Alvarez launched her second home run of the day, another two-run shot, while Danielle Smith, Meghan Harman and Skylar Segura collected two hits apiece.

A Segura bases loaded ground out in the third scored LMU's first run before Hannah Montalban and Harman hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth to make it a 3-0 ball game.

Nicole Clowdus' bases loaded walk made it 4-0 in the fifth and the Lions tacked on another run in the inning on a passed ball. Alvarez's homer to right center in the sixth pushed the spread to seven.

The Lions (18-15, 1-1 PCSC) and Roadrunners (4-17, 1-1 PCSC) do battle again on Sunday with game times scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
