CLEARWATER, Fla. - The LMU softball team improved its season record to an even .500 (11-11) and closed out play at the USF Under Armour Showcase 4-1 with a 2-1 victory over Northwestern early Sunday morning.
Freshman pitcher Sydney Gouveia was superb with 10 strikeouts for a second straight game. She allowed just four hits, all singles, and one walk, improving to 3-1 on the season.
Northwestern's lone run came in the second inning as Amy Letourneau led off with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an Andrea DiPrima single up the middle.
Gouveia surrendered one more hit in the inning, but caught Kristin Scharkey with a strikeout looking to end the inning with two Wildcats stranded on base.
The Lions, who have made come-from-behind wins commonplace as of late, rallied again on Sunday. This time it was freshman Hannah Montalban with a two-RBI ground rule double down the left field line that scored Jordan Price and Skylar Segura. Price was pinch running for Stephanie Crist who had reached on a hit by pitch while Segura reached on a leadoff walk.
Gouveia was not the only dominating pitcher in the game as Northwestern's Letourneau fell to 8-6 despite nine strikeouts and just three hits allowed. She also walked four.
After opening the 2013 season on the road for their first 22 games, the Lions are home at Smith Field for the first time this season on Tuesday, March 12, hosting a doubleheader against Bethune Cookman. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
