LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The 10th-ranked LMU men's water polo team fell behind by as many as four goals to 11th-ranked UC San Diego and could not overcome the deficit as the Tritons held on for a 10-8 win over the Lions on Wednesday night at Canyonview Pool.
Milutin Mitrovic led the Lions with three goals and Seth Coldren added a pair. Goalie Kyle Testman had nine saves. Josh Stiling of UCSD led all scorers with five. The Lions, who defeated UC San Diego about two weeks ago 10-6 at the NorCal Invite, fall to 4-5 on the season while UCSD improves to 5-3.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 3-1 lead with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter. A pair of five-meter goals by Mitrovic tied the score at 3-3. The Tritons would then take over, scoring the next three goals and six of the next eight in the game to take a 9-5 lead with 5:49 left in the game.
Collin Walters and Coldren would cut the lead to 9-7 with 3:18 to play, but John Butler answered with his second goal for the 10-7 lead. John Mikuzis added the Lions final goal.
LMU will continue its stretch of rivals when they take on Pepperdine in the first game of the SoCal Tournament on Saturday at 9:20 a.m.
