LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Anthony Ireland continues to add to his resume from his standout second season, earning honorable mention honors to the 2011-12 National All-Jesuit Men's Basketball Team. The Association of Jesuit Colleges and University and the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight announced the 2011-12 Jesuit All-American team last week.
Ireland became the first Lion to earn NABC All-District honors and was a first-team All-WCC selection after finishing second in the West Coast Conference in scoring at 16.1 points per game. Ireland was a Jesuit Freshman All-American in 2010-11.
He finished the season leading the Lions with 548 points, which ranks 23rd all-time in LMU history. He added 4.94 assists and 1.71 steals per game. He also ranked fourth in the WCC in assists, eighth in free throw percentage (77.1%), 15th in three-point percentage (33.8%), fourth in steals, 10th in three-point field games made (1.5), eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.6) and second in minutes played (36.5).
He earned a pair of WCC Player of the Week honors, his first coming after a 27-point performance to earn a win at BYU (1/19/12). He added five assists and went 7-for-9 from the field and 12-for-14 from the free throw line, all in the final 3:30 of the game. His second honor came after the Lions defeated No. 16 Saint Mary's (2/15/12) on the road and two days later knocked off Valparaiso (2/17/12) in the ESPN BracketBuster game. He had 16 points and seven assists against the Gaels and then went for 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists against Valpo.
In the postseason, he finished the three CIT games averaging 23 points per game, adding 5.3 rebounds per contest and 6.0 assists. He finished hitting 17-for-21 from the free throw line (81.0%) and 44.2 percent from the field.
Ireland is a finalist for LMU Athlete of the Year, which will presented tonight (Monday, April 23) at the 2012 LionsFund Iggy Awards.
