Better Late than Never for the Lions

April 14, 2012

Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif.-- It was better late than never for the Lions as they collected their first win of a four game series against Sacramento State, Saturday afternoon. After a five hour rain delay, the Lions and Hornets battled through ten innings of high powered offense until the sun came down.

The Lions were able to connect with a pair of RBI doubles by senior Kelly Sarginson and junior Skylar Segura, both driving in two runs a piece. Up 4-1 through three innings, LMU bats were swinging for the fences.

The Hornets fought back in the fourth inning as Medeiros gave up two solo home runs to bring the Hornets within one.

Sarginson cracked her ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning, this time, a two run bomb over the center field wall, putting the Lions up 6-3.

Sophomore Stevie Goldstein came in to relieve Medeiros in the fifth inning. But the bats of Sac State continued to fight back.

Junior Meghan Harman restarted the Lions offense in the bottom of the fifth inning with a lead off solo home run that cleared the right center wall, giving the Lions a 7-5 lead.

The lead did not last long as Sac State's Emily McCormick cracked her second home run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, tying the game at 7 a piece.

Crippled by a short pitching bench, the Lions looked to bring in their third pitcher of the game, Dana Waldusky to close out the game. Little did she know, she had five more innings ahead of her. Waldusky collected her 11th win of the season giving up only three hits and striking out one in five innings of work.

After ten innings, Samantha Nelson's sacrifice fly to center field was just the hit the Lions needed to clinch the win, as Ahlo tagged up from third base and collected the game winning run.

The Lions and Hornets will play a triple header Sunday, with the first game starting at 10:00am at Smith Field.
