LOS ANGELES - The LMU women's water polo team opened the 2012 LMU Invitational with 40 combined goals in a sweep of conference foes, setting several team records in the process at the Burns Aquatics Center on Friday. The 10th ranked Lions scored 24 goals in the first game of the day to set the program record as they improve to 9-7 on the year.

The Lions opened the tournament with a 24-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino and followed that with a 16-6 win over Colorado State. The 23-goal win over the Coyotes is also a program record as they remain unbeaten against Western Water Polo Association foes at 5-0.

For the second time in a week the Lions had a player score six goals in a contest as Alexandra Honny went for a half dozen in the win over the Rams. She had eight goals on the day, as did Morgan Bonk who had four goals in each of the wins.

Kimberly Benedetti added six goals for the Lions, including four in the opening game win. Goalie Elise Ponce had 16 saves on the day.

The Lions will complete the LMU Invitational on Sunday when they face Sonoma State at 9:15 a.m., and then Pacific at 3:30 p.m.
