LOS ANGELES - LMU men's tennis has found a good run of form. The Lions defeated Hawaii (2-7) Wednesday at the LMU Tennis Center, 5-2, for its third straight win. The victory was the team's sixth in its last seven matches and fourth consecutive at home. LMU (7-5) was lead by reigning WCC player of the month Nicholas Bjerke who extended his singles win streak to seven in the match with Hawai'i.
Doubles started with a win by Wilton and Van Kann over Spiker and Okamoto, 8-6. The Warriors tied the round as Lam and Rice defeated Volmari and Simko, 8-6 on court two. The point came down to No. 1 doubles as Bjerke and Bustamante were taken to a tiebreaker by Brooklyn and Kovalyov. The Lions duo was victorious in the tiebreak 7-1 to win the match, 9-8.
The hard fought doubles round extended into singles play. Felix Van Kann was the first to close out his match defeating Hawai'i's Jared Spiker 7-6, 6-1 on court five. The Warriors got their first point of the match as Sebastian Bustamante lost to Kovalyou 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in No. 3 singles. Nick Northcott gave a Lions another point with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Lam.
Todd Volmari clinched the match for LMU with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 win over Rice. With the match at hand, Nicholas Bjerke beat Brooklyn in a battle on court one 7-6, 7-6, extending his match winning streak to seven. In the final singles contest, Alex Wilton fell to Okamoto 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
The Lions look to continue its streaks next Tuesday, March 20 as it hosts Darmouth at 1:30 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Center.
