Boca Raton, Fla. -- Lions Softball split their first two games of the Hilton Suites Strike Out Cancer Tournament Friday in Boca Raton, Florida. The Lions had a tough start, dropping their first game 9-0 against Tulsa. The Lions rallied back later that afternoon to secure a 3-0 win over Florida International University.
Game 1: LMU, 0 Tulsa, 9.
The Lions (8-4) struggled offensively, recording only three hits through five innings. All three hits happened in a rally late in the fourth inning, with shortstop Sam Fischer, right fielder Sam Nelson, and third baseman Skylar Segura recording a single each. Unfortunately all runners were left stranded on base at the end of the inning.
Three pitchers saw action against Tulsa (6-2) with sophomore Stevie Goldstein (0-1) getting her first start since returning from injury. Goldstein went two innings giving up seven hits with two strikeouts. Waldusky and Grady came in for relief each earning a strikeout as well. Tulsa's Samantha Cobb led the Hurricanes with 3 RBIs after going 2-3 from the plate.
Game 2: LMU, 3 Florida International, 0
A few hours following the Tulsa game, the Lions were back in action against Florida International. The Lions struck first offensively in the second inning off a Brittany Pereda RBI double, her third of the season. Sterling Shuster and Sam Fischer led the Lions with two hits a piece. Fischer added to the Lions lead by driving in her sixth double of the year for two RBIs.
Junior Molly Medeiros (6-1) pitched her sixth complete game and recorded her second shut out. Medeiros had 2 strikeouts in seven innings, giving up four hits and walking only one.
The Lions continue play action Saturday against Michigan State at 6AM Pacific Time.
