UCI at LMU Box Score
LOS ANGELES -- UC Irvine scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to open up a tight, back-and-forth non-conference battle, to earn a 12-9 win over LMU at the Burns Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions (4-5) had four players scored two goals each, while UC Irvine (9-2) had Jessy Cardey and Danielle Warde score five goals a piece.
The anteaters scored the fist two goals of the game, then setting the tone of the day, LMU bounced back with two of their own on 6-on-5 opportunities. All told, there were 25 ejections on the game as LMU went 5-for-12 on the extra-man attack, while UCI went 4-of-11.
The game was tied at 3-3 after one, and the Anteaters again built a two-goal lead. Casey Flacks scored one of her two goals to cut it to 5-4. UC Irvine regained the two-goal lead with Cardey's third goal with 3:07 to play in the half.
Alexandra Honny would then score her second of the game with 53 second on the clock with a five-meter penalty shot. The goal would start a three-goal run for the Lions.
Jessica Morelos scored her second of the game to tied the game at 6-6 with 6:29 to play in the third. Then Laura Lopez scored with 5:51 to give the Lions their first lead of the game, 7-6.
However, UC Irvine responded with three unanswered goals of their own to take a 9-7 lead on a Warde goal with 1:42 left. Two of the three goals came on the 6-on-5.
Kimberly Benedetti would score her second goal with 17 seconds to play in the third quarter to cut the score to 9-8.
UC Irvine would then pull away with another three-goal run, taking a 12-8 lead on a five-meter penalty shot with 4:24 on the clock. Flacks scored her second with 3:03 to play, but LMU would get no closer.
The two teams will play again on Saturday, Feb. 25 in the first round of the 2012 Anteater Invitational at UC Irvine pool starting at 10:15 a.m.
