Shorthanded, banged up and facing the #13 team in the nation, LMU fell to the UCLA Bruins 24-2 in five innings Tuesday afternoon. Senior Kelly Sarginson hit a two-run homer over to left center in the bottom of the first inning to give the Lions a 2-1 leader. That would be the only lead of the game.
The Bruins exploded scored ten runs in the second inning and nine runs in the third to break the game open. Leading UCLA was catcher Dani Yudin who drove in six RBIs and went 3-for-3, batting .706.
Sarginson's homerun stood as the lone hit for the Lions until the fifth inning. Junior Skyler Segura and senior Kylie Ahlo each earned themselves a base hit, giving the Lions three hits against UCLA's Ally Carda (3-0).
The Lions have been plagued with injuries entering Tuesday's match-up missing four starters. Without first baseman Olivia Alvarez, catcher Kathryn Dutton, third baseman Meghan Harman and right handed pitcher Stevie Goldstein, the Lions had a short bench throughout the whole game.
The Lions saw five pitchers throughout five innings. Starting pitcher, junior Erica Grady (0-1) got the loss for the Lions. Grady went two innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits.
The Lions will look for redemption this weekend as they take on Utah Valley in a four game series. Action starts Saturday with games at 10 a.m. and noon and Sunday with games at 10 a.m. and noon.
