SANTA CLARA - Facing their third ranked opponent of the 2012 season, the LMU women's soccer team battled hard for 90 minutes, but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to No. 18 Santa Clara Friday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.

It was the second straight 1-0 West Coast Conference loss for the Lions (6-5-2, 0-2-0 WCC) who will look to get back on track Sunday when they return home to host Saint Mary's. Santa Clara stretched it's unbeaten streak to eight straight as it improved to 7-2-4 overall and 1-0-1 in WCC play.

LMU put the offensive pressure on the Broncos early as shots by Whitney Sharpe and Jenni Benger inside seven minutes both forced saves by SCU keeper Lexie Rubattino. The Lions had three more shots on frame saved by Rubattino in the first half and the teams went into halftime knotted in a scoreless tie.

It was the Broncos who finally broke through at the 64:12 mark when Julie Johnson scored her fourth goal of the season on a header off a cross from Lauren Matheson.

The Lions finished the night with 12 shots to the Broncos' 15, but produced a 7-4 shot-on-goal advantage. LMU also held a 5-0 corner kick advantage.

Rubattino came up with seven big saves for the home side while Brittany Jagger made four saves on the night for LMU.
