Offense Struggles in Loss to Matadors

Sept. 23, 2011

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - LMU came out of the gates as the aggressor against Cal State Northridge Friday at Sullivan Field. But despite unleashing four shots in the opening 13 minutes of play, and 10 for the balance of the game, the Lions could never find their mark, falling 3-0 to the Matadors.

The loss marked just the third time this season that the Lions (6-3-1) had allowed multiple goals in a game.

Melissa Fernandez put Cal State Northridge (2-5-1) on the board in the 26th minute, slotting a shot past a diving Brittany Jagger. Alexis Barbara and Heidi Farran were credited with assists on the play. Twelve minutes later, the Matadors went up 2-0 when Nicole Cruz headed in a corner kick cross from Stephanie Norton.

The Lions continued to struggle with possession and flow in the second half and the Matadors eventually put the game away in the 64th minute as Katie Russ scored off an assist from Fernandez following a misclear off a corner kick.

Tawni Martino finished with three shots for LMU while Linda Bakker and Etajha Gilmer had two apiece. Jagger made two saves, as did CSUN goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo.

LMU will look to right its ship when it returns to action Sunday, Oct. 2, traveling to face UNLV in its final match before WCC play starts on Oct. 7 at San Francisco.
