LOS ANGELES - For the third time each this season, LMU junior Kelly Sarginson and sophomore Molly Medeiros claimed Pacific Coast Softball Conference weekly honors, the conference office announced Tuesday. Sarginson was named the Coastal Division Player of the Week while Medeiros was the Coastal Division Pitcher of the Week as both helped the Lions post a 4-1 record that included a weekend sweep of Cal State Bakersfield.
Sarginson (Walnut Creek, Calif.) became the first player in PCSC history to hit three HRs in a game during the Lions' 10-9 win over CSU Bakersfield in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. She hit a two-run HR in the first inning, a three-run shot in the third, and another two-run HR in the fifth. Sarginson finished the game 3-for-3 and tied a school record with seven RBI. Sarginson's third HR of the game was her 16th of the season to tie the PCSC season record. Sarginson was not finished, however, adding three doubles on Sunday and driving in a further six runs to give her 56 on the season, breaking the previous PCSC single-season mark of 53. All total, Sarginson hit .583 (7-for-13) with three HR and 13 RBI in five games last week. She was six-for-10 (.600) in the Lions' four-game sweep of the Roadrunners. This is Sarginson's third Player of the Week Award in 2011, having previously been honored on March 21 and April 11.
While Sarginson was doing her thing at the plate, Medeiros (Saratoga, Calif.) was dominating in the circle, earning the decision in three of LMU's four wins against CSU Bakersfield. As a starter, Medeiros fired two complete-game shutouts, gaining two wins as a starter and one in relief. In the series opener, she allowed seven hits and one walk, while striking out five to earn a 1-0 decision. On Sunday, she pitched a three-hitter in an 8-0, five-inning win. After allowing two singles in the first inning, Medeiros retired 11 straight before yielding a two-out single in the fifth. As a reliever in the Lions' 10-9 win in Saturday's nightcap, Medeiros worked 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. For the season, Medeiros is 14-7 with a 2.11 ERA and has struck out 93. She is tied for the PCSC lead in wins. Medeiros has earned Pitcher of the Week accolades three times in 2011 and this is her fifth career award.
LMU (28-25, 12-4) enters the final weekend of the regular season trailing San Diego by two games in the Coastal Division standings. The Lions and Toreros will play a four-game set this weekend to decide the division champions, starting with a Saturday doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. The regular season will conclude Sunday with a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.
