SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Fifth-ranked Hawaii pulled away with a five-goal fourth quarter to defeat No. 8 Loyola Marymount, 16-8, in the opening game of The Bronco Invitational at Santa Clara University Friday night.
Junior Kimberly Benedetti continues to score in bunches, leading the Lions once again with three goals. She has scored 11 goals in the last three games and runs her team-high total to 46 on the year. The Lions fall to 19-7 on the season.
Hawaii took a one-goal lead after the first period. The teams then lead traded goals as Hawaii led 7-6 at the break. The Rainbow then put a three-goal cushion on the board with a 4-2 edge in the third quarter. They then put the game away, scoring five-unanswered in the fourth frame.
The Lions will play four conference games over the weekend, starting with a pair on Saturday. They open with Sonoma State at 12 noon, followed by Colorado State at 4 p.m.
