LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The sixth-ranked LMU women's water polo team got back on track thanks to a pair of wins against Western Water Polo Association foes on Saturday at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center, defeating Santa Clara, 11-6 and Cal State San Bernardino, 13-5.
The Lions improve to 7-0 against the WWPA on the season, 19-6 overall, and run their winning streak against conference foes to 31. Santa Clara defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 8-4, in the other match-up on the day.
Junior Kimberly Benedetti finished the two games with eight goals, four in each contest. Erin Manke added six in the two wins for the Lions.
In the first game on the day, Manke and Benedetti traded goals throughout as they each finished with four goals to pace the eight-goal win. Jessica Morelos added a pair of goals.
The Lions led 3-1 after one and 5-1 at the break before erupting for seven goals in the third to break open the game.
Against Santa Clara, the Lions scored eight of their 11 in the first half in doubling up the Broncos at the break.
With the game tied at 7-3, the Lions scored four straight to build an 11-4 lead and then held SCU to just two goals in the final half. Goalie Elise Ponce had nine saves.
LMU will trade places with the Broncos and head to Santa Clara for the 2011 Bronco tournament. The Lions will open with No. 5 Hawaii on Friday, April 8 at 5 p.m.
