LMU Win 3rd Annual Betty Werner Cup

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - With a big singles win from senior Aris Andreasian in the last home match of his LMU career, the Lions came out with a 4-3 win over Dartmouth to win the 3rd Annual Betty Werner Cup. The Lions clinched the doubles point and then in singles saw wins from Alex Wilton, Nicholas Bjerke and Aris Andreasian to earn the overall victory. The match today was played in honor of the late Betty Werner, LMU Senior Associate Athletics Director who lost her battle with cancer in August 2008.

In doubles the Lions were led by a win from top duo, Daniel Simko and Nicholas Bjerke. Simko and Bjerke defeated Grief/Roby of Dartmouth 8-5 on court one for their seventh win of the season together setting their season record to 7-7 overall. Alex Wilton and Sebastian Bustamante then clinched the doubles point for the Lions with a win on court two defeating Laser/Cenenari 8-5. With this win, Bustamante and Wilton are 6-7 overall this season. With wins on the top two courts, the Lions took the early lead 1-0 over the Big Green. On court three, Tom Price and Jack Zapala fell 8-5 to Chatellus/Ghorbani.

In singles, Nicholas Bjerke continued his strong singles play with a win on court two. Bjerke defeated Xander Cenenari of Dartmouth 6-4, 6-4 to give the Lions their second point on the day. Bjerke is now 9-6 in singles and recorded both a doubles and singles win today against Dartmouth. Next for the Lions, Alex Wilton recorded a back-to-back singles wins defeating Cameron Ghorbani on court four. Wilton earned the Lion's only singles win yesterday against UCLA and was able to continue this strong play recording another win this morning. After the Lions dropped matches on court three, five, and six, the match stood tied 3-3.

With the overall match on the line, Senior Aris Andreasian came back after dropping his first set to win his singles competition 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. With this win, Andreasian secured the overall team win for the Lions by just one point, 4-3. This morning, Andreasian played his last home match of his senior year, going out on a high note--not only overall win for his team.
