LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men's tennis team recorded a conference win today over Gonzaga University. In their last conference match up before the West Coast Conference Tournament in April, the Lions recorded a 5-2 win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs. After earning the doubles point with wins on all three courts, the Lions played strong in singles to win the overall win. With this win, the Lions set their overall season record to an even 6-6.
In doubles play, the Lions swept the Bulldogs with wins on all three courts. On court one, top duo Daniel Simko and Nicholas Bjerke defeated Sullivan/Chong of Gonzaga 8-5. Simko and Bjerke recorded their third straight doubles win setting their record to 6-5 overall. On court two, Alex Wilton and Sebastian also played strong earning another their third straight win. Wilton and Bustamante defeated Davis/Ismath 8-4. Finally on court three Tyler Gottshall and Aris Andreasian played together for the first time this season to earn a win over Guillermo/Eischen 8-2. With wins on all three courts, the Lions took an early 1-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles play the Lions earned four wins to take the overall victory on the day 5-2. Nicolas Bjerke continued to lead the Lions in singles conference match ups. In conference match ups, Bjerke's win over Gonzaga makes him 4-1 in conference singles play, and 7-4 overall. Bjerke defeated Eischen 6-0, 6-1 on court two. Teammate Sebastian Bustamante also earned a solid win today over Chong 6-2, 6-1 on court two. Bustamante has also won his last three singles matches. Alex Wilton also earned a win for the Lions regaining his winning record to 6-6 on the season. Wilton defeated Sullivan of Gonzaga 6-4, 6-3 on court four making him 6-6 overall in singles play. Tom Price gave the Lions their final win of the day over Ismath of Gonzaga 6-2, 6-2.
In other singles play, while Aris Andreasian recorded a win in his first doubles match of the season against Gonzaga, he was unable to hold on in singles falling to Levin Guillermo of Gonzaga 6-1, 6-2 on court one. Also in singles, freshman Tyler Gottshall played his first singles match for LMU. Gottshall took Davis of LMU to three sets after dropping the first set but fell in the third 6-1.
The Lions recorded a solid win over Gonzaga today, with three of their singles points coming from true freshmen. Additionally the Lions showed improvement in their doubles play, winning all three matches. Next up the Lions will face Marist University on Saturday March 12, 2011 at 12:00 pm.
