SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The LMU men's tennis team took to Santa Barbara, Calif. last weekend to partake in the UCSB Classic hosted by UCSB. The tournament was the final fall tournament for the Lions. Mother Nature played tricks on the participants over the weekend, forcing the postponement of singles play on opening day.
Despite the rainy conditions, the teams did manage to squeeze in doubles competition on the first day of play. In the "A" flight, the doubles team of Nicholas Bjerke and Sebastian Bustamante defeated a team from UCSB by a score of 8-2. In their next match, they suffered a loss of 9-7 to West and Sousa of UCSD. On day 2 of doubles play, Bjerke and Bustamante defeated Goranson and Cox of Westmont, 8-2. Also playing for LMU in the "A" flight were Robin Kiyabu and Alex Wilton, who lost to Goranson and Cox of Westmont, 8-1. Kiyabu and Wilton followed by pulling out a tough match against Luu and Jigante of UCSD, winning 9-8. Playing the same duo for the second time during the tournament, Kiyabu and Wilton finished play with a loss to Luu and Jigante on day two of doubles play, 8-4.
In "A" flight singles, Daniel Simko suffered a loss to Chapman Chan of UCSD, 6-2, 6-2. However, in his next match, he defeated Brian Cox of Westmont, 7-6, 6-0 (10-8). Wilton also participated in the "A" flight singles, falling in a pair of matches. Kiyabu was the lone LMU player in "B" flight singles, defeating John Bertram of Westmont, 6-0, 2-6, (10-5) and later falling to Ziad Sultan of UCSB 6-1, 5-7 (10-4).
The Lions return to action on January 19 when they host Nevada at 10 a.m. at the LMU Tennis Center.
