2011 ITA Regional Results
The LMU men's tennis team finished up play at the 2011 Southwest Regional Championship being hosted by Pepperdine University last weekend.
Alex Wilton highlighted play for LMU, defeating a pair of opponents before falling in the round of 32.
Wilton advanced to the round of 32 by defeating 17th-seeded Turner of Pepperdine by scores of 6-2, 6-2. After a hard-fought match, including an opening-set victory, Wilton fell to San Diego's top player in Nikola Bubnic, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Robin Kiyabu also competed in singles, defeating UC Riverside's Luis Gastao before dropping a match to Dennis Mkrtchian of UCLA, 6-2, 6-1. After an opening round loss, sophomore Daniel Simko played extremely well in the consolation bracket for LMU. Simko defeated a pair of opponents before falling to Hunter Nicholas of SDSU, 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinal. Nicholas Bjerke also moved to the consolation bracket after losing to Moss from Pepperdine, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. Bjerke went on to defeat Fresno State's Nakireddi, but fell to Sebastian Bell from Cal Poly in the next round of the consolation bracket.
On the doubles side, LMU sent a pair of doubles teams into action, as Kiyabu and Wilton, and Bjerke and Simko, took the court. Kiyabu and Wilton beat Cederwall and Golding of Pacific, 8-6, to move onto the second round where they lost to Bubnic and Visy of USD, 8-1. After defeating a pair of players from UCSB, Bjerke and Simko also fell in the second round, dropping a decision to Fresno State.
Men's tennis will return to action on November 2 when it travels to UCLA for the Southern California Intercollegiate Tournament.
