SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- LMU women's water polo got right back on track, posting a pair of victories two days after falling for the first time in six weeks. The Lions defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 9-2, and Santa Clara, 12-6, in the opening day of The Rodeo Tournament hosted by Santa Clara on Saturday, winning for the 15th and 16th time in 17 games.
The pair of wins against Western Water Polo Association foes improves the Lions to 7-0 against the WWPA and to 21-3 on the season. It is the 10th straight season the Lions have 20 or more wins on the season.
Sophomore Casey Flacks scored six goals in the two games, putting in three goals in each game, while goalie Kristine Cato had 16 saves, including nine in allowing just two goals against the Coyotes.
The Lions defense held CSUSB scoreless in three of the four quarters and led 6-0 at the break as they were never threatened. Kimberly Benedetti and Anne Scott scored two goals each.
In a rematch of last year's WWPA title game at the same pool, the Lions led 6-3 at the break and broke open the game with a four-goal fourth quarter. Mary Anne Campos, Daisy Carrillo, and Diana Romero each scored a pair in the win.
The Lions will have a tough test with No. 3 Cal at 9:15 a.m., and will complete the tournament with Colorado State at 1 p.m.
