Beavers and Rain Wash Away Saturday Play

March 6, 2010

Box Score

Fullerton, Calif. - First LMU saw its lead wash away, then they saw the rest of their day's play wiped out as the Lions fell 5-3 to Oregon State in the early contest at the DeMarini Invitational on Saturday in Fullerton, Calif. The second game for the Lions (3-5) against third-ranked Florida was postponed due to inclement weather until Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

The scenario flip-flopped from Friday night, when LMU fell behind 3-0 to UC Davis before rallying for a 7-5 victory. This time, it was the Lions who took a 3-0 lead as senior Darcy Pagnini's RBI groundout put the Lions on the board in the first and doubles by sophomore Kelly Sarginson and junior Amy Charpentier tacked on two more in the fourth.

Oregon State would rally back, scoring four runs with two outs in the fifth to take a lead they would not relinquish. After senior Melissa Dykema gave up a single but came back with two strikeouts, consecutive singles got the Beavers back to 3-1 and a two-run double tied it up. Dykema then lost control on a wild pitch to bring home the go-ahead run. OSU would add an insurance run in the sixth and keep the Lions off the board in their final two at-bats.

Sophomore Sam Fischer had a hit in three at-bats to extend her hitting streak to nine games dating back to last season. Charpentier finished 2-for-3 and Sarginson had a hit to extend her streak to seven games while senior J.J. Hartung had her seven-game hitting streak snapped.

Dykema (2-3) gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings. Freshman Molly Medeiros pitched two innings of one-hit ball in relief.

With the reschedule of the Florida contest, LMU will now face two ranked opponents in #3 Florida and #19 North Carolina. The Lions will now take on UNC at 11:15 a.m., later than the original time of 9 a.m., and will close out the weekend at 4:30 p.m. against the Gators.
