LOS ANGELES, CA -- Ninth-ranked LMU never trailed and kept just enough distance on Cal State Bakersfield to earn a 10-7 win in Western Water Polo Association action on Friday afternoon at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center. With the win, the Lions extend their best start in school history to 11-2 on the year.
Mary Ann Campos led the Lions with three goals and goalie Kristine Cato had 11 of her 14 saves in the first and fourth periods to keep the Lions in the lead the entire game. Daisy Carrillo, Diana Romero and Kimberly Benedetti all scored two goals apiece. Kaitlin Torres led all scorers with four.
The Lions jumped out first with the only goal in the opening frame when Romero scored on a 6-on-5 with 1:45 to play. Cato faced six shots in the frame, including a penalty shot, in keeping CSUB off the scoreboard.
The scoring increased in the second period with CSUB tying the game with Alysno Moss' first goal just 54 seconds into the period. The Lions answered right away, drawing a 6-on-5 and scoring on Campos' first goal to take a 2-1 lead. Benedetti then score a little more than a minute later on another 6-on-5 to make it 3-1.
The Lions finished the game 6-for-12 on the 6-on-5 attack while CSUB went 3-for-9.
Torres cut the lead to one, 3-2, on a 6-on-5 attack with 3:39 to play in the second quarter. However, the Lions got a 5-meter goal from Carrillo and another 6-on-5 goal from Campos to go up 5-2 at the break.
LMU started the second half with an Anne Scott goal to take a 6-2 lead. LMU would stretch the lead to as many as five, 8-3, and the Roadrunners wouldn't get closer than three the rest of the way.
