Cowling, Young Earn All-WCC Honors

March 1, 2010

LOS ANGELES - LMU sophomore Alex Cowling has been named to the All-West Coast Conference First Team, the conference office announced on Monday when the postseason awards were handed out. Junior Renahy Young was also recognized, earning her third straight conference award with a place on the Honorable Mention list.

Cowling, a 5-11 guard/forward from Benicia, CA, led the conference in scoring during WCC play with a 20.4 point-per-game average, adding 7.8 rebounds per contest and shooting 50.9% in the 14 conference games. A preseason All-WCC selection after earning Newcomer of the Year honors as a freshman, she scored in double figures in every WCC outing, including nine performances of 20-or-more points, and netted a career-high 31 points in the win over San Francisco on February 13. On the season, she led the Lions in scoring at 17.3 ppg after putting up the second-most points in a single-season in school history with 485, which is also a record for points by an LMU sophomore. She enters this week's Zappos.com West Coast Conference Tournament needing eight points to set the single-season record. Cowling also added 6.9 rpg on the year and posted a team-best five double-doubles.

Young (Torrance, CA) follows up her First Team selection last year with her second career placing on the Honorable Mention squad. The 5-8 guard was second on the team in scoring (16.0 ppg) during conference play while leading the Lions in assists (3.4 per game), steals (2.4 per game), and three-pointers made (29). For the season, she is averaging 15.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 3.1 apg, and 2.1 spg. She reached double figures in scoring in 13 of the 14 WCC outings, twice topping 20 points. Earlier this year, Young became the 11th player in school history to pass the career 1,000-point mark and she currently sits in fifth place on the LMU scoring charts with 1,195 points.

This year marks the 11th straight season that LMU had at least two players earn All-WCC honors and it is also the 11th straight year that at least one Lion has been named to the First Team. LMU (12-16, 5-9 WCC) has gained the #6 seed at the Zappos.com West Coast Conference Tournament and will open play this Friday at approximately 2 p.m. against #7 San Francisco.
