IRVINE, Calif. -- Anne Scott scored in the third overtime period in an 11-10 thrilling win over No. 10 UC Irvine and then the LMU women's water polo defense shutdown No. 9 Cal State Northridge to earn ninth place at the 2010 UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

Playing against 14 of the nation's best, the Lions completed the final day of the UCI Invite with a solid sweep. Scott scored four of her six goals on the day in the overtime winner.

The Lions improve to 8-2 on the season, and freshman goalie Kristine Cato finished with 22 more saves, giving her 45 in the four goals.

In the first game of the day, the host Anteaters scored four fourth period goals to force overtime. In the first overtime frame, they scored two goals to take a 10-8 lead. However, Scott and freshman Erin Manke scored in the waning moments of the second overtime frame to force sudden death. Both teams went scoreless in the first sudden death overtime before getting Scott's winner.

In the ninth place game, the Lions struggled early and trailed 1-0 after one. However, they scored three in the second and third periods to pull away. The Lions defense allowed just one goal in each frame and Cato had 11 saves.

Seven different players scored in the win.

The Lions travel to UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, March 7 to take on the Gauchos at 12 noon and then Fresno Pacific at 2:30 p.m.
