Feb. 14, 2010

Box Score

Las Vegas, Nev. - LMU's defense was undone by three errors that led to five unearned runs in dropping the finale of the Sportco Kick-off Classic in Las Vegas 7-3 to hosts UNLV on Sunday. The Lions closed out the first weekend of play with a 2-3 record.

The last game of the day, the start time was delayed more than two hours due to previous games running long. When the Lions finally took the field, they quickly found themselves trailing 4-0 after a pair of first-inning miscues. Marissa Nichols began the frame by reaching on an errant throw and was immediately moved to second by a sacrifice bunt. Jaci Hull delivered a double to the gap in right that plated Nichols. After a walk, Alyssia De La Torre delivered the big blow with a three-run homer to right.

The teams traded runs in the second. LMU got on the board with a two-run rally when junior Priscilla Satete singled and came home on sophomore Brittany Pereda's double. The Rebels (4-1) countered with a double by Nichols that led to her scoring following LMU's second error of the contest.

LMU pulled within two with two runs in the fourth inning at 5-3. The Lions strung together four straight singles with the third by sophomore Kelly Sarginson bringing in both RBI. The Lions weren't able to capitalize on two runners in scoring position as Kylie Wagner worked out of the jam.

Laura Briones got a run back for UNLV with a solo shot to right center to push the score to 6-3. UNLV added an insurance run in the sixth when LMU's third error allowed Laura King to reach and she came home two batters later.
