LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It was the final home game for the LMU men's water polo program, and the ninth-ranked Lions sent nine graduating players out with a 9-2 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Western Water Polo Association action on Saturday afternoon.
Ikaika Aki, Brian Flacks, Tibor Forai, Eric MacDonell, Derek Milligan, Zach Mix, Albert Samuels, Daniel Smith and Andy Stevens made their final appearance at Burns Aquatics Center, including six who played four years at LMU. Of that group, five have won a title in their first three years, with championships coming in 2007, 2008 and 2009. All told, the group played in 624 games as Lions.
It was the Lions fifth straight win, and they improve to 13-7 overall and 11-1 in the WWPA. Claremont, who won earlier in the day, saw their record fall to 12-10.
Samuels, Smith and junior Edgaras Asajavicius scored a pair for the Lions. Miligan, Mix and Aki also scored in their final home game.
The scoring was more than enough as Stevens and the Lions' defense held Claremont scoreless in the second half.
LMU continues a key stretch against WWPA foes next weekend when they head north. The Lions will take on top-ranked Cal in their home pool, which is also home to this year's NCAA tournament, on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. The Lions will then take on UC Davis (ranked 13th and 12-0 in the WWPA) on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m., and then Santa Clara (ranked 11th and 7-5 in WWPA) on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
