Defense Turns the Tide

Oct. 2, 2010

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - In the tenure of LMU Head Coach John Loughran, his teams have been known for defense. They were one of the best in 2009, and on Saturday it was their defense that turned the tide for the Lions' in the first day of play at the SoCal Tournament hosted by UCLA. After a tough 10-6 setback to No. 7 Pacific, the Lions knocked off No. 16 Princeton 9-1 to earn the split at Spieker Aquatics Center.

Pacific scored the first three goals of the game and jumped out to a 6-2 lead the half to knock-off the Lions for the second time on the season. The Tigers (7-2) scored three goals in each of the first three quarters.

Tibor Forai and Edgaras Asajavicius each scored a pair of goals and goalie Andy Stevens had eight saves, three in the fourth quarter in which the Lions allowed just one goal.

It was a jumpstart that fed into the Lions second game on the day, as Stevens and the Lions' defense posted shutouts in the first, third and fourth quarter. The All-American goalie finished the game with 15 saves, the highest total in the tournament's first day.

The one-goal allowed is the lowest for the Lions since a 15-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Sept. 5, 2009.

LMU led 4-1 after the first half, and 5-1 after the break. They would add a four-goal final quarter to improve to 7-6 on the season. Forai, Asajavicius, and Albert Samuels would scored two goals each in the win.

The Lions will take on 14th-ranked Santa Clara at 12 noon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Sunday in the final day of the SoCal Tournament.
