LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Earlier this weekend the LMU Men's tennis team held their first conference match against University of San Francisco at the LMU Tennis Center in Los Angeles. The Lion's fell to USF 6-1 in their first conference match of the spring season as they were unable to stop the Don's quick plays and strong hits.
In doubles play, the Lions were highlighted by victory by sophomore Geza Bazula and sophomore transfer from Azuza Pacific, Jack Zapala. The pair defeated San Francisco's Schuacher and Bake 8-6. At the number two and one positions however, the Lions struggled to shut down the Don's. The Lion's top pair, junior Ivan Lopez and sophomore Otto Sauer fell to the Don's Tu and Cohen 8-3 and senior duo Borja Malet and Renzo Maggi lost a close 8-6 to DeCastro/Hart.
In singles play, junior Ivan Lopez once again came out on top, defeating Cohen of USF 6-3, 7-6 at the number two position. Lopez's focus and drive came through to give him and the Lion's their only singles victory against the Dons. In other singles play Otto Sauer played USF's number one seed Tai Tu, falling in two sets 6-1 and 6-2. Borja Malet pushed USF's Bakke to three sets however lost in the final set 6-1. Aris Andreasean, Geza Baluza and Renzo Maggi also played well for the Lions however were unable to stop conference opponents USF.
Next up the Lions will travel south to face the University of San Diego on Friday February 13th at 1:30 pm.
