Renahy Young Named WCC Player of the Week

Dec. 21, 2009

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Junior Renahy Young took home her third career West Coast Conference Player of the Week award and first this season, having earned the honor for December 14-21, the conference office announced Monday. Young is the second LMU player to earn the WCC weekly honor, following sophomore Alex Cowling's co-Player of the Week award on November 30.

Coming off of finals week, Young (Torrance, Calif.) posted an LMU season-high 26 points to lead the Lions to an 80-63 win over Cal Poly on Saturday. Young carried the Lions at the beginning, scoring 11 of the team's first 13 points and finished with her second 20-plus scoring game of the season and 10th of her career. Her 26 points were the most by a Lion since Cowling had 26 against UNLV on December 6, 2008 and it was Young's largest output since her career-high 31 in triple overtime against Arizona on November 15 of last season. Young connected on five of her first six shots from the floor, then closed it out with a steady 11-of-12 from the free throw line to pass Jamie Jesko (1989-93) and move into sixth place on LMU's career free throws made list with 258.

Young leads the Lions in scoring this year at 15.8 ppg. She is also the team leader in assists (2.54 per game) and steals (1.82 per game) while shooting 46.6% from the floor and 81% at the line. She has reached double figures in every game this season and in 13 straight dating back to last year. She continues her quest for 1,000 career points, ending the week with 943.

LMU (6-5) closes out its pre-Christmas schedule this evening when it hosts San Diego State at 6 p.m.
