Box Score

San Diego, Calif. - Sophomore defender Tyler Krumpe scored his first goal of the season four minutes into overtime to lift LMU to a 2-1 victory at West Coast Conference leaders and 19th-ranked San Diego Thursday night at Torero Stadium. The victory brings the first half of conference play to a close with the Lions (7-6-1, 2-3-1 WCC) closing the gap on the previously undefeated Toreros (9-4-0, 5-1-0 WCC) in the first game of their home-and-home series.

In the sixth and final game of the first round of conference play, it was only fitting that the contest would need extra time, which was the fourth for the Lions in six games. Senior Steffen Canty began the move on the sideline, feeding the ball to sophomore Logan McDaniel, who centered it to Krumpe. From eight yards out, Krumpe's shot beat San Diego goalie Kelin Briones to end the match at 94:22. The goal was Krumpe's first of the season and second of his career.

Before supplying the game-winning assist, McDaniel got the Lions on the board with his first of the year in the 17th minute. McDaniel took a pass from junior Rafael Baca and finished past Briones. Sophomore Jonas Reiter was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Although San Diego held a 6-4 shot advantage in the first half, the Lions the better opportunities. Krumpe found himself on a breakaway in the fifth minute and crossed to the middle but no Lion was on the other end as the Torero defense cleared. Ten minutes later, McDaniel crossed to an open Artur Jozkowicz but the sophomore could not keep his header down. It would not matter, though, as the Lions broke through two minutes later.

LMU had one more chance in the first half when Jozkowicz tried a long-range effort that Briones dove to his left for the save. Meanwhile, freshman Max Young was only called into action for one save in the opening 45 minutes to send the Lions into the locker room with a 1-0 advantage.

San Diego came out of halftime looking for the equalizer and got it seven minutes after the restart, thanks to a fortuitous bounce. LMU's current run of bad luck seemed to be continuing when Patrick Wallen's shot from 25 yards was deflected off a defender's shoulder, looping over Young and into the corner to tie the game at one.

San Diego nearly took the lead in the 70th minute when Stephen Posa tried to head the ball down. Posa missed and teammate Andrew Feld rushed in for a second attempt which was on target but cleared by an LMU defender standing at goal line.

Coming out for overtime, LMU took it to the Toreros, registering three shots from the kick-off. McDaniel and Baca each forced Briones into a save before Krumpe ended the contest.

Young finished with five saves in registering his fourth win of the season. Briones also stopped five shots for USD. The Toreros finished with a 12-10 shot advantage.

LMU improves to 3-2-0 this year against ranked opponents and records its second victory over a top-25 team at Torero Stadium this season. The Lions previously knocked off #5 Dartmouth at the San Diego Nike Classic in September. LMU also improves to 2-1-1 this year in overtime contests.

The Lions and Toreros will return to action on Sunday at Sullivan Field. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
