Results
Santa Clara, Calif. - In the opening round of the West Coast Conference Championships, fifth-seeded Loyola Marymount men's tennis fell to fourth-seed, 72nd-ranked San Francisco (15-6) 4-0. The Lions (9-13) will now play Santa Clara Saturday at 9:00 a.m. for a right to play for fifth place on Sunday.
In doubles action, San Francisco got the first win at the No. 3 spot where Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching beat sophomores Renzo Maggi and Nick Von Der Ahe, 8-5. LMU took the victory at the No. 1 position with seniors Jacek Twarowski and Sam Tadevosian defeating Asaf Cohen and Falko Huttenberger, 8-6. The deciding doubles point came down to the outcome on court two where freshmen Ivan Lopez and Johan Berhof faced Thong Tu and Rainer Nachbauer. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Dons were able to hold on in the end, defeating Lopez and Berhof 9-8 in a thrilling match.
In singles, at the No. 5 slot, Huttenberger gave the Dons a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Maggi, Cohen posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Tadevosian on court three, and Tu clinched the match victory for USF with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Twarowski at No. 1 singles to give San Francisco the 4-0 victory. Lopez, Berhof and freshman Stefan Nikolic did not finish their matches.
Fifth-seeded LMU will now battle eighth-seeded Santa Clara Saturday at 9:00 a.m. The winner will advance to the consolation final to play for the fifth place standing in the WCC.
