Lions Fall to UC Santa Barbara, 7-0

Feb. 17, 2008

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount men's tennis team was swept, 7-0, by UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at UCSB's Recreation Center courts. The loss snaps LMU's two-game winning streak and pushes them to 3-2 overall on the season.

Despite the sweep, the overall match was quite a bit closer than the score would indicate. LMU forced UCSB to come from a break down both at #1 and save three match points at #2 doubles to "steal" the doubles point.

Jacek Twarowski took the first set over Bijan Hejazi at the No. 1 spot, taking the opening frame by a count of 7-6. Unfortunately for the Lions, Hejazi responded well in the second and third sets, winning 6-3 and 6-4, respectively.

Sam Tadevosian fell at the No. 2 spot, 7-5 and 6-4, and Ivan Lopez fell in two sets after a good match, 6-3 and 7-6. UCSB's Jack Hui defeated Renzo Maggi by a count of 6-0, 6-1. Johan Berhof and Aris Andreasian, playing in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, put up a strong fight before eventually dropping matches to the Gauchos. Andreasian took the first set of his match, 6-3, before losing 6-3 and 6-4 over the next two. Berhof was defeated in straight sets 6-3 and 6-4.

The Lions return to action on February 21 when they host UC San Diego at 2 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Center. LMU will then host San Francisco at 12 p.m. on February 23.
