Los Angeles, CA (May 23) -- The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its 2005 All-Region teams and the 2005 National Scholar-Athletes. Caitlin McClain and Vanessa Glendenning of Loyola Marymount University's crew team were both honored by the CRCA as McClain took home National Scholar-Athlete honors and Glendenning was named second-team All-West Region.
The National Scholar-Athlete award recognizes student-athletes with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher that competed in 75 percent of her team's 2005 spring races. Also, the student-athletes selected were upperclassmen (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year) in terms of eligibility and their head coaches must be good standing members of the CRCA.
A total of 142 student-athletes from 49 schools were honored for their efforts during the 2005 season. The total number of recipients improved from the 2004 season, when 124 student-athletes were honored.
The honor is yet another year-end accolade for the four-year senior McClain. She was a first-team All-WCC and All-WIRA in 2004 while also earning First-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honors. In addition, she was a CRCA Academic All-West Region selection.
McClain will earn a double major, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in both Urban Studies and Political Science and she will graduate with a 3.93 GPA. She has been a consistent member of the Dean's List since she got to LMU in 2001 and is a member of Alpha Sigma Nu - National Jesuit Honor Society.
In addition, the CRCA announced its 2005 All-Region selections, which are presented by Pocock. The awards recognized the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains this season. Thirty-nine schools are represented on the first and second-team All-Region, led by eight institutions that placed five rowers each. Varsity 8+ boats ranked in the top six regionally received automatic selections for their respective nominees.
Glendenning was named first-team All-West Coast Conference in April and has led the Lions' Varsity 8 to a second place and third place finish in the overall standings of the WCC the last two seasons. She was a first-team All-WCC and All-WIRA selection in 2004 and was a second-team CRCA Academic All-West region selection.
