8th Inning Rally Hurts Lions

Feb. 26, 2005

Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. - Utah strung together four hits in the eighth inning to break open a tie game and secure the 8-4 win over LMU Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium. Four Utes combined to hold the Lions to just six hits in the second game of the three-game series.

The Lions fall to 2-5 during the February homestand, while Utah improves to 3-6. LMU starter Stephen Kahn went 6.2 innings deep and struck out seven, but the bullpen allowed the winning four runs off six hits in the eighth and ninth.

Utah tallied a hit in every inning except the first, when Kahn retired the side. Kahn gave way to Daniel Macias, Blake Feaser (1-2) who took the loss, and Ezequiel Ruvalcaba.

The Utes' starter Chad Cullers had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the fourth, when LMU scored three runs off three straight hits to start the inning. Kyle Mura led-off the Lion rally with a single to left, followed by Chris Pettit's infield single. Freshman Josh Bradbury then knocked the upperclassmen in with a double down the left field line for his first two career RBI. Bradbury later scored on two wild pitches by Utah reliever Brandon Bailey.

Utah and LMU each added a single run in the fifth. For the Lions, it was a solo shot over the right field wall by sophomore A.J. LaMonda.

But the damage LMU did in the fourth and fifth innings was not enough for the win. The Lions couldn't get the insurance runs they needed, as Utah relievers Bryce Freed and Brian Lane (2-1), who earned the win, held them scoreless in the final four innings.

Joe Mozeleski and Tyler Kmetko each had a 3-for-5 outing at the plate today for the Utes. John Welsh added two RBI.

Junior James Cooper gave the Lions two of their six hits Saturday.

The teams will wrap-up the three-game series Sunday at Page Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
