ATLANTA (Nov. 5) -- Loyola Marymount University graduate Sherman Gay (2001-04), who had one of the greatest senior seasons for the LMU men's basketball team in 2003-04, was drafted in the seventh round by the Roanoke Dazzle during the 2004 National Basketball Development League draft on Friday, Nov. 5.

Gay was a first-team All-West Coast Conference selection in his senior campaign a year ago, averaging 16.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. He set LMU's all-time career block record with 140 and was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, the first player in the LMU history to earn such an honor.

Roanoke took Gay with the second pick of the seventh round, joining Roanoke's first-round pick Corey Alexander of Virginia, who Gay played against a year ago. Gay was one of just two WCC players picked in the draft, joining USF's Darrell Tucker, who drafted with the fourth pick in the ninth round by the Huntsville Flight.

Gay becomes the third player from LMU to join the league, which is in its third year. Peter Cornell (1996-96) and Elton Mashack (97-01) have also played in the NBDL.

As for Gay, he finished his career playing in 108 games as a Lion, tied for ninth all-time at LMU. He finished with 857 points, half coming in his record-setting senior season. He capped his career with a 30-point, 15-rebound performance in the WCC tournament win against Portland. It was the best point-rebound total for any Lion in the WCC tournament since Hank Gathers in 1989.
