Malibu, Calif. -It took six Pepperdine pitchers, but the Waves earned a 5-4 victory over Loyola Marymount, Saturday afternoon at Eddy Field Stadium. LMU drops its second straight to the Waves, falling to 21-15 overall, 8-6 in the West Coast Conference. Pepperdine also moves to 21-15, 10-3 in the loop.
Despite leaving 14 on base and having a runner thrown out at home, the Lions still had an opportunity to win the game in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Lion first baseman Carl Stoeber lined a double down the leftfield line, moving Joe Silva to third base. But it wasn't enough as Pepperdine's Kea Kometani struckout the final LMU hitter for his eighth save of the season.
The Lions took the early lead as Jonathan Oller and James Cooper led off the second inning with back-to-back singles. With two outs, Joe Frazee hammered a base hit up the middle to drive in Oller. LMU All-American Billy Lockin came up with the Lions' fourth single of the inning, scoring Cooper and giving LMU a 2-0 lead.
LMU added another run in the fourth, but threatened for much more. With one out and Matt White on first base, Frazee, Lockin and Jonathan Higashi singled to plate White and chase Wave starting pitcher Jacob Barrack from the game. But Pepperdine relief pitcher Rob Hobbs was able to induce an inning-ending double play.
Pepperdine's Nelson Caraballo hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, bringing the Waves to within 3-1. Caraballo's blast was just the fourth hit off LMU starting pitcher Kyle Huddy.
Huddy ran into more trouble in the bottom of the sixth as the Lions committed a pair of errors. Pepperdine capitalized with three unearned runs, highlighted by a Michael Beattie two RBI double, taking a 4-3 lead.
Barrack lasted just 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on a season-high 12 hits, while Huddy (4-4) earned the loss, allowing just one earned run and striking out six in 5.2 innings pitched. James Johnson pitched a scoreless sixth inning, picking up his first victory of the season.
Both teams added late-inning runs, as Frazee, Lockin, Higashi and Stoeber all had three hits on the day. Cooper and Oller each had two, while Higashi drove in two RBI.
The two teams will complete their series tomorrow at 1 p.m., once again at Eddy Field Stadium.
