Final Stats

Los Angeles, Calif. - Despite dropping the doubles point, the Loyola Marymount men's tennis team downed West Coast Conference rival Portland 5-2, Sunday afternoon. The Lions claimed five of the six singles matches in route to upping their league record to 1-1. LMU, 9-7 overall, has now won four consecutive duals and seven of its last nine.

"We really came back strong in the singles after losing the doubles point," LMU head coach Nik DeVore said. "The last three matches we have really struggled with the doubles, but we have been able to rebound well and play solid singles from top to bottom."

Leopold Graeubig and Michael Wojnarowicz, ranked 35th nationally, did win their doubles match against the Pilots' Roman Borvanov and Ram Hernandez, 9-7.

Tigran Martirosyan, Graeubig and Johannes Asuja all won their singles matches within a few minutes of each other, and in a timely fashion. All three Lions won in straight sets dropping just eight games combined in the six sets.

"Their victories gave the other guys who were still on the court a lot of confidence, and took some of the pressure off," DeVore said.

LMU freshman Robert Kennedy was able to outlast Peter Miskovic to win 6-2,3-6,11-9, while Wojnarowicz won his match 7-6,7-5 over James Redpath.

"Rob has really started to develop into a very solid six over the past couple of weeks," DeVore said. His confidence grows with every match, regardless of whether he win's or loses. I'm really proud of the resolve this team has been showing the past couple of weeks."

The Lions will return to action when they host nationally ranked Princeton on Wednesday at the LMU Tennis Center. LMU will continue a busy home stretch this weekend when they welcome Utah on Friday. Both matches will begin a 1:30 p.m.
