Spokane, WA (April 21, 2002) - Loyola Marymount University was once again victim another solid pitching performance by a Gonzaga starter as the Bulldogs completed a sweep of the Lions with a 9-1 win on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions (16-25, 9-8), who averaged more than seven runs a game in West Coast Conference play, managed just four runs combined in the three-game series against the Bulldogs (23-17, 11-7). Gonzaga's starter Brent Dayton went eight innings and allowed just one run, unearned, on four hits to improve to 3-2 on the season. Lions starter Vincent Cordova went 4.0 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits for the loss.
Gonzaga took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Nate Gold hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Eric Rodland, who walked to lead off the inning. The Bulldogs would then stretch the lead to 4-0 with a three-run bottom of the fourth inning.
In the inning walks once again hurt the Lions as Grant Zurmely's lead off walk was the first run of the inning. Gold earned a double to advance Zurmely to third. He would score on Brian Munhall's single. The Bulldogs would finish with three hits in the inning.
They would add a run in the fifth and another in the sixth for the 6-0 lead. LMU would get their only run on the day in the top of the seventh. Junior Joe Silva hit a two-out single and then scored on an sophomore Billy Lockin's single. Freshman Carl Stoeber was the only Lion to have more than one hit, finishing the day 2-for-3.
Gonzaga added three runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 9-1 win. They finished outhitting the Lions 14 to 5 and in the series 44 to 25.
The Lions return home to face Santa Clara in a three-game series that starts Friday, April 26 at 3 p.m.
