Santa Barbara, Calif., - Loyola Marymount University's men's tennis team (2-0 overall, 1-0 WCC) defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs 7-0 in Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at Westmont College. The Lions' No. 3 doubles team was the only aspect of the team to fall to the Mustangs, 8-9.
Tigran Martirosyan and Leopold Graeubig led the Lions in doubles, as they defeated Cal Poly's Mike Marquez and Eric Carroll 8-5 in the No. 1 match. Johannes Asuja and Anthony Evrard defeated Mustangs Nick Tracy and Greg Levy 8-6. Beau Berglund and Ryan Gerstner found the No. 3 match tough as they were defeated 8-9 (8). LMU, however, was awarded the point for the doubles victory.
The Lions took all six singles matches against the Mustangs as well. Freshman standout, Martirosyan, led the Lions up front in the No, 1 singles match, defeatin Cal Poly's Stacy Merenoff in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Graeubig defeated Marquez in the No. 2 match going three sets with the Mustang (3-6, 6-2, 6-2). LMU,s Asuja took the No. 3 spot with ease, defeating Davy Jones in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). Evrard, who is playing in his first season with the Lions after redshirting last season, defeated Tracy at the No. 4 spot, taking the victory in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). Berglund played at No. 5 for the Lions as he defeated Carroll in straight sets (6-4, 7-5). Gerstner rounded out the match for theLions defeating Levy in straight sets (6-3, 6-1).
