LOS ANGELES, Calif. (July 5) - Loyola Marymount University announced Friday, June 30, 2000, that effective immediately it will no longer sponsor a NCAA Division I men's volleyball program.
The Lions, who participated in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in men's volleyball, finished its 30th season of competition in 2000 with a 12-12 mark. The program compiled one winning record in its 30 years, coming in 1985 when the team finished 17-16. Overall, the Lions were 196-456 (.300).
Although the program began in 1970 with an 0-4 record, the Lions did not hire a full-time coach until the 1976 season under Pete Field, who finished 2-10 in that season and 3-11 in 1977. LMU had seven coaches in its tenure, concluding under the direction of Rick McLaughlin. He coached the Lions for eight seasons, finished his career with a mark of 60-126.
Following McLaughlin's resignation on June 16, LMU Athletic Director Bill Husak began a search for a replacement. However, Husak and the University conducted a review of the program and determined that it would be best for LMU to discontinue the program.
"My first impulse upon Rick's resignation was to immediately begin a search for a new coach," said Husak. "However, I thought it would be best to review the status of the program and its future. Although it is with sadness that I make this announcement, this emotion is tempered by the hope that an improved competitive experience will occur for LMU athletics."
The student-athletes on scholarship with the men's volleyball program have been released to explore playing with the other 20-plus NCAA Division I men's volleyball programs. However, those choosing to remain at LMU, will continue to receive their scholarship as long as the student meets the Loyola Marymount University scholastic standards.
