Angie Akers

Loyola Marymount University Beach Volleyball Head Coach John Mayer, announced in January 2022 that he has added Angie Akers to his staff as the program’s new Assistant Head Coach. Akers is in her second season at LMU entering 2023.

“We are honored to be welcoming Angie to our program,” stated Coach Mayer. “She has been successful in everything she’s done. She was an elite level professional beach player, a gold medal winning coach and she even qualified for and completed the Boston Marathon. She does it all!”

Angie Akers is alumnae of the University of Notre Dame where she played Indoor Volleyball for four years.

After graduating in 1998, Akers was married and began running marathons before beginning her professional beach volleyball career in 2001. She qualified for and completed the 2001 Boston Marathon in 3 hours and 24 minutes.

In 2002, Akers began competing in Professional Beach Volleyball and became the AVP Rookie of the Year. In 2009, she competed on the FIVB World Tour where she finished the season ranked fifth in the world and was awarded FIVB Rookie of the Year.

From 2009-2012 Akers was a member of the USA Beach National Team. In 2014 she retired from competing.

In 2015, Angie moved to the Netherlands and began coaching for the Dutch women’s Beach National Team as a federation coach. Angie brings a wide range of coaching experience, as she led her Dutch team to the 2016 Rio Games. She recently served as 2021 Tokyo Olympics Head Coach for USA’s April Ross and Alix Klineman, who took home the gold medal.

“I am most excited to have her on our team because of the person that she is and for the mentor she’ll be for our student-athletes,” Coach Mayer added. “She is curious and thoughtful and constantly looking to learn and develop herself as a coach. Even with all her success she is still eager to learn and improve. Learning is what our program is all about which is why Angie is such a great fit. I’m so thrilled to have her on the Bluff!”
