Former University of Iowa standout Brittany Miller was named an assistant coach on Sept. 1, 2016 and primarily works with the pitching staff in her role with the Lions.
Â
"We are thrilled to add Brittany to our staff," remarked Strinz-Ward. "She has a wealth of experience working high-level pitchers and helping them reach their potential and lead their teams to post season. Brittany can lead our pitchers from her experience as a high-level player as well. Hiring Brittany is one more positive step in elevating our program. We are excited to have Brittany and her family become Lions."
The 2020 season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic after just 23 games. The Lions were unable to play the final 30 games of the season, including any of the team’s WCC matchups. The highlight of the shortened season was the back-to-back wins against ranked programs to open the Judy Garman Classic in Fullerton. LMU pitched a complete game shutout to top #4 LSU on Feb. 27 then returned the following day for a 2-1 come-from-behind win over #13 Michigan on Feb. 28.
Â
During the 2019 season, Miller shepherded the Lions’ pitching staff to a 3.10 cumulative ERA and helped lead the Lions to a 40-20 overall record (11-4 in conference play). Under Miller’s guidance, the Lions saw pitchers Samantha Manti and Hannah Bandimere each finish the 2019 campaign with a sub-3.00 ERA, while both recorded more than 149 innings of work in the circle. Bandimere led the West Coast Conference in earned run average and was named a First-Team All-Conference selection, while fellow pitcher Linnay Wilson earned a mention on the All-WCC Second Team.
Â
In 2018, Miller helped guide the Lions to a 34-24-1 mark (11-3 WCC) as the team finished second place in the West Coast Conference and won the Postseason NISC Championship. Under her leadership, LMU led the WCC in the pitching column, posting the lowest ERA (3.70) and opposing batting average (.242) in the conference . Pitcher Hannah Bandimere was named 2018 Co-Pitcher of the Year with a record of 22-12. Freshman pitcher Linnay Wilson led the conference in strikeouts (150) while Bandimere ranked second with 127. Wilson was also named the WCC's Pitcher of the Week three times during her rookie campaign.
Â
Directly prior to joining the LMU softball program, Miller spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa State, where she guided the pitching staff to three no-hitters. In 2014, she tutored Katie Johnson to one of the best freshman campaigns in program history, as Johnson led the Cyclones in all statistical categories. A year later, in 2015, Stacy Roggentien posted a breakout season in 2015, improving from four strikeouts in her junior campaign to 111 the following season as the team’s ace.
Â
Before her time in Ames, Miller spent three seasons at North Dakota State, where she served as a graduate assistant for one season before being named an assistant coach. In Fargo, Miller helped guide the Bison to three straight Summit League Tournament championships and a trio of NCAA tournament appearances. She was instrumental in leading Krista Menke to both Summit League Freshman and Pitcher of the Year honors along with a nod to the NFCA All-Midwest Region second team in 2012.
Â
One of the most decorated players in Iowa softball history, Miller starred on the diamond for the Hawkeyes from 2006-09. She was a four-time All-Big Ten selection, three-time NFCA All-Midwest Region honoree, two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, and an NFCA Second-Team All-American in 2009.
Â
The only player in Iowa history to earn Team MVP honors in all four seasons of her career, Miller saved her best for last in 2009 as she obliterated the Hawkeye record books, setting career marks in strikeouts (1,083), complete games (110), innings pitched (1,011.2), and games pitched (183), as well as the single-season strikeout mark (339).
Â
The No. 7 overall pick in the 2009 NPF draft, Miller played two seasons for the Akron Racers, posting a 4-3 record to go with a 2.28 ERA and guiding the Racers to a pair of postseason appearances.
