Annual Report Summary for the Athletic Academic Advising Services Unit (AY 2022-23):

The Athletic Academic Advising Unit is housed within the Athletics Department and has a dual reporting line (to both the President’s Office and Academic Affairs). The professional staff consists of the Associate Athletic Director, three Athletic Academic Advisors, and one Graduate Assistant (focus on Study Skills and tutoring), who support the 400+ student-athletes in their academic and personal development. In addition, the staff provides guidance to each LMU student-athlete on their journey from high school student to intercollegiate student-athlete to college graduate. Athletic Academic Advising is located in the Student Athlete Academic Center (first floor of Gersten Pavilion). The Student Athlete Academic Center includes an open study area, desktop computers for student-athlete use, two private study rooms, and offices for the Athletic Academic Advising staff. In addition, the student-athletes use two other areas in the Athletic Department to fulfill their studying needs, these include the Lions Athletics Center Large Conference Room and the Founders Room located in Gersten Pavilion.
LMU has a proud reputation of academic excellence among its student-athletes. According to the most recent Federal Graduation Rate report that was recently submitted last year (students who entered LMU in fall 2015), LMU Athletics posted a rate of 74 percent for those student-athletes, on Athletics aid and a 70 percent four-class average (Cohorts 12-15). LMU Athletics also earned a Graduation Success Rate of 95 percent for all student-athletes who received Athletics aid (joined team or transferred to LMU, and are part of the same entering cohort).
In the 2021-22 Academic Progress Rate (APR) report, posted in May 2023, LMU Athletics earned an overall score of 979.3. Men’s Golf, Women’s Swimming, and Men’s Water Polo each received scores of 1000 (perfect) in their multi-year assessments (4-year time period). 17 of 19 LMU Varsity teams scored above a 970 multiyear APR, 14 of 19 LMU Varsity teams scored above a 980 multiyear APR, and 7 of 19 LMU Varsity teams scored above a 990 multiyear APR.
In 2022-23, the student athletes continued to perform at a high academic level in the classroom. For the 2022-23 school year, the average GPA for the LMU Athletic Department was 3.384 and the average units passed by all LMU student-athletes was 14.577. At the conclusion of the Spring 23 Semester, the cumulative GPA of the LMU Athletic Department is 3.379.

Fall 2022 Student-Athlete Academic Performance Summaries
The following information was pulled from the fall 2022 Registrar statistical reports. There were 401 student-athletes who participated on 18 teams in the fall of 2022 compared to 439 student-athletes who participated on 18 teams in fall 2021. This academic analysis compares fall 2022 to fall 2021 performance:
- 16 teams averaged over a 3.0 GPA in fall 2022 compared to 15 teams who averaged over a 3.0 GPA in fall 2021.
- The Department GPA increased in fall 2022 (3.371) when compared to fall 2021 (3.272).
- The Men’s team average GPA in fall 2022 is 3.204 compared to 3.203 in fall 2021.
- The Women’s team average GPA in fall 2022 is 3.504) compared to 3.328 in fall 2021.
- In fall 2022 the Women’s team average was above a 3.0 GPA for the 40th consecutive semester (starting in spring 2003). The Combined Department GPA in fall 2022 was above a 3.0 GPA for 26th consecutive semester (starting in spring 2010).
- 312 (77.8%) student-athletes achieved over a 3.0 GPA in fall 2022 compared to 336 (76.5%) student-athletes who achieved over a 3.0 GPA in fall 2021.
- 149 (37.2%) student-athletes made the Dean’s List in fall 2022 compared to 154 (35.1%) student-athletes who made the Dean’s List in fall 2021.
- 16 (4%) student-athletes were on academic probation in fall 2022 compared to 24 (5.5%) student-athletes who were on academic probation in fall 2021.
- The Women’s Tennis team captured the Department Team High GPA award in fall 2022, earning a 3.73 GPA.
- The Men’s Cross Country/Track team captured the Male Team High GPA award in fall 2022, earning a 3.53 GPA.
- 64% of all student-athletes passed 15 units and above in fall 2022 compared to 59% of all student-athletes who passed 15 units and above in fall 2021.
- All Ten Women’s teams earned above a 3.0 GPA in fall 2022.

Upon review of the spring 2023 statistical reports, the data listed below was extracted for this report. 376 student-athletes were listed on the official roster for 18 Varsity teams in the spring of 2023 (compared to 406 student-athletes listed on the official roster 18 teams in spring of 2022).
This analysis compares spring 2023 to spring 2022 performance:
- 17 teams averaged above a 3.0 GPA in spring 2023, compared to all 17 teams in spring 2022.
- The Department GPA increased in spring 2023 (3.398) when compared to spring 2022 (3.302).
- The Men’s team average GPA increased in spring 2023 (3.290) when compared to spring 2022 (3.193).
- The Women’s team average GPA increased in spring 2023 (3.485) when compared to spring 2022 (3.384).
- Following spring 2023 the Women’s team average was above a 3.0 GPA for the 41st consecutive semester.
- Following spring 2023, the Men’s team average was above a 3.0 GPA for the 12th consecutive semester.

- Men’s Soccer captured the Team High GPA award in spring 2023 with a 3.78 GPA.
