Loyola Marymount University Sports Medicine recognizes sports induced concussions and Mild Traumatic Brian Injuries (mTBI’s) pose a significant health risk for student-athletes participating in Division I athletics. In conjunction with the NCAA Executive Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS), and in accordance with the NCAA Concussion Policy and Legislation, the LMU Sports Medicine Staff has adopted and implemented a concussion management plan to help prevent, identify, evaluate, and manage concussions sustained by our student-athletes.
The LMU Concussion and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) Management Plan has been reviewed by The Division I Concussion Safety Protocol Review Committee and is in complete accordance with the Inter-Association Consensus: Diagnosis and Management of Sport-Related Concussion Guidelines and meets the requirements of the Concussion Safety Protocol Checklist issued by the NCAA. This Concussion Management Plan provides the appropriate guidelines that should be followed in the event that a student-athlete suffers a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. The Sports Medicine staff, in conjunction with the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Team Physicians, have the unchallengeable authority to make all medical decisions in regard to student-athletes’ medical care and return to play.
All of the concussion management progression lies exclusively with the Loyola Marymount University Sports Medicine staff. The team physician will make the final determination of return-to-play once the student-athlete becomes asymptomatic and post exertion assessments are within normal limits. LMU student-athletes who sustain a concussion or traumatic brain injury during non-sports related activity will be managed in the same manner as those sustained during an athletic activity. The entire concussion management process of the student-athlete including the baseline assessment, initial post-injury evaluation, and eventual return to full athletic and academic participation, including any diagnostic testing, shall be documented within their medical file.
The LMU Sports Medicine Concussion and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) Management Plan was designed by Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, Keith R. Ellison and LMU Team Neurologist, Dr. Vernon Williams, of the Cedar-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute. Dr. Vernon Williams will act as the Primary Medical Director for all concussion and head related injuries. The Concussion Management Plan will be reviewed, updated, and submitted to the Division I Concussion Safety Protocol Review Committee annually.
