Los Angeles, Calif., Sunday, May 14, 2000 -- The Loyola Marymount women's softball team claimed its second straight Western Intercollegiate Softball Tournament Championship with a 7-6 win over Saint Mary's College today at Marsalli Park in Santa Clara, Calif. The Lions had defeated the University of San Diego, 7-3, earlier in the day. Meghan Dunbabin and Lacy Wood were named to the 2000 All-WISL Tournament team.

LMU (36-26 Overall/10-10 WAC) started the final day of the WISL Tournament with a convincing win over San Diego. The Lions took a commanding 6-2 lead after just three innings and added their final run in fifth to hold on for the 7-3 victory. 3B Jaime Lyons, SS Kim Bissett, 1B Nicole Edelbrock and C Erin Hogan each connected for doubles off Torero pitcher Amy Lopez. Bissett fed off Lopez's pitching going 2-for-3, scoring two runs and also driving in two RBIs. Wood threw her third complete game of the year for LMU giving up just two earned runs on five hits.

The Lions clinced the 2000 WISL Tournament Championship with an exciting 7-6 victory over Saint Mary's. The Gaels (23-33 Overall) had all but recorded the last out of the game as they led LMU 6-0 after six innings. The Lions would not go quietly though as they sent 12 batter to the plate and tagged SMC's pitcher Jenn Pick for seven runs in the seventh inning. RF Melinda Frasquillo started things off for LMU with a lead-off single to left field. Hogan saved the Lions from being shutout as she followed with a double down the left field line which scored Frasquillo. Edelbrock then came through with a pinch hit single moving Hogan to third. CF Anna Trauernicht drew a one out walk from Pick and loaded the bases with Lions for 2B Laura Eckley. Eckley answered with a single to center field scoring Hogan and leaving the bases loaded again. Lyons continued the onslaught with a two RBI double to left cutting the lead to 6-4. DH Heather Gelhorn and Bissett drew back-to-back walks, Bissett collected an RBI with her walk as the bases were loaded. Frasquillo followed with her second single of the inning, a two RBI shot which drove in the game-tying and go-ahead run.

LMU's defense led by Wood, who came on in relief of Corianne Rogalsky in the sixth, came up big in the bottom half of the seventh. Wood retired the Gaels in order and the Lions held on to win their second consecutive WISL Championship. Wood picked up the win and improved her season record to 3-1.
