IRVINE, Calif. — No. 11 LMU dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 8 UC Irvine 13-8 and No. 18 Navy 19-18 on Saturday. The Lions outshot Navy 40-33 but ultimately lost in overtime.
UC Irvine
LMU answered UC Irvine's opening goal with
Gabrijel Burburan at 5:13 of the first quarter, then followed Brody Luke's goal at 4:52 with scores from
Nico Furneaux at 2:58 and
Nick Leung at 1:49. UC Irvine put together three unanswered goals in the second quarter, with Jayson Hubbard, Samuel Bowman and Cole Francisco scoring between 6:20 and 2:49. After UC Irvine opened the third quarter with Ben Atkinson's power-play goal at 6:19, the Lions responded with back-to-back goals from
Bence Barics at 5:53 and
Luka Dimic at 4:35. UC Irvine then scored the next three goals to close the third quarter and added three more in the fourth quarter before Dimic scored again for the Lions at 2:02.
Soren Martin added a power-play goal at 1:03 and
Roman Saroyan scored with four seconds remaining, while UC Irvine finished with a 13-8 edge in goals and a 36-28 advantage in shots.
Dimic led the Lions with two goals on five shots and added a steal.
Jaxon Hoover recorded a team-high two assists. Saroyan tallied a goal, an assist and two sprint wins.
Pablo De Souza finished with 16 saves and one steal in goal.
Navy
LMU opened the scoring on
Roman Saroyan's goal at 6:40 of the first quarter, and the teams continued to answer throughout an 11-goal first quarter that included Lions scores from
Bence Barics,
Gabrijel Burburan,
Jake Bonavia and two from
Luka Dimic. Navy opened the second-quarter scoring at 5:45, while LMU responded with
Soren Martin at 4:13 and Barics at 3:11 before Navy recorded the final two goals of the second quarter. The Lions started the third quarter with consecutive goals by Burburan at 6:43 and Bonavia at 6:00, then later added three straight scores from
Nick Leung at 4:37,
Nico Furneaux at 3:15 and
Ian Moore at 2:05. In the fourth quarter, Furneaux answered a Navy goal with a score at 5:55, but Navy followed with the next two goals at 3:33 and 1:31. Leung scored twice in the first overtime quarter, at 2:08 and :16, and
Caden Poulleau added a second-overtime-quarter goal at 2:35 before Navy closed with three consecutive power-play goals. LMU finished with 18 goals on 40 shots, while Navy had 19 goals on 33 shots and converted eight power-play chances.
Leung scored three goals on five shots, added three assists and recorded three steals. Bonavia finished with two goals, three assists, one steal and a sprint win. Barics converted both of his shots, scored twice and drew four exclusions.
Pablo De Souza posted seven saves and added a steal.
The Lions fall to 7-6 overall and are ranked No. 11 nationally. Navy improves to 10-1 overall.
