LMU Uses Sixth-Inning Burst to Complete Shutout Win Over UCR

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU softball kept its early-season momentum rolling with a sharp all-around performance, shutting out UC Riverside 4-0 on Friday afternoon at Smith Field. The Lions out-hit the Highlanders 10-3 and used timely offense late to pull away in the fifth and sixth innings.

LMU's pitching duo set the tone from the opening frame. Freshman, Sara Pinedo opened the day with three clean innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two. Jessie Gilbert took over in the fourth and was dominant in relief, tossing four innings of one-hit softball, walking four but allowing nothing across to earn her first win of the season. The pair combined to face just 27 batters while not allowing a single run.

After four scoreless innings, LMU finally broke through in the fifth. Mya Allen's aggressive baserunning sparked the rally after she reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Moments later, Justine Lambert laid down another perfectly placed bunt single, and pinch-hitter Mina Lei Tala delivered the game's first RBI with a single to center, bringing Allen home for the 1-0 lead.

The Lions blew the game open an inning later. Sakora Harvell crushed a leadoff homer to left-center, her first of the season, to double the lead. LMU kept applying pressure as Analiah Lummus walked and Taelor Walker reached on a fielder's choice, eventually setting the table for Sydney Poole, who delivered a clutch two-run single to right. The swing plated Walker and Lummus to extend the advantage to 4-0, where the Lions held firm the rest of the way.

Offensively, Lambert led LMU with a 3-for-3 day, consistently sparking the offense with bunt singles that kept pressure on Riverside's defense. Harvell, Poole, and Lummus each added multi-base contributions, while four different Lions collected stolen bases as LMU's speed played a major factor throughout.

The Lions (2-0) continued their strong start with another complete team win-stringing together crisp defense, confident pitching, and late-game execution to secure the shutout on home turf.

The Lions will next face University of Utah at 5:30 PM to complete their double header for the day.
