Late Rally Falls Short as LMU Edged by Utah, 4-3

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU softball closed out their doubleheader with a hard-fought battle against Utah, falling 4-3 after a late push in the seventh inning brought the tying run within reach. The Lions out-hit the Utes 8-6 and showed resilience until the final swing, but an early Utah surge proved to be the difference.

Utah jumped ahead quickly behind a solo home run from Kennedy Proctor in the first inning, but LMU immediately responded as Sydney Poole worked a walk and eventually scored on a fielder's choice paired with a defensive miscue to even it at 1-1 after one.

The Utes reclaimed the lead in the third on a deep home run from Payton Crank, then added two more in the fourth, capitalizing on a pair of walks and a defensive error that allowed two unearned runs to cross, stretching the margin to 4-1.

From there, LMU's pitching steadied. Lindsay O'Dell delivered a strong relief outing, tossing four innings while allowing only one hit and no earned runs, keeping the Lions within striking distance. Her work out of the bullpen, just one hit over 13 batters, kept momentum from fully shifting Utah's way.

Offensively, Avery Francis powered the lineup with a three-hit performance, continuing her standout day after recording a hit in the opener. Sakora Harvell added a pair of hits, including a double, while Taelor Walker chipped in two hits of her own.

LMU mounted its biggest push in the seventh. With runners on and pressure rising, Izzy Jamgotchian drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home a run, and Sydney Poole was hit by a pitch to force in another, pulling the Lions to within one at 4-3. With the tying run on third and the winning run on base, Utah turned a game-ending double play to escape the threat.

Despite the loss, LMU showed grit in the final frame, turning what looked like a quiet finish into a tense, late rally.

LMU moves to 2-1 on the young season and will carry the positives, O'Dell's steady relief, Francis' hot bat, and a never-quit offense into their next matchup. The Lions return to Smith Field tomorrow at 3:00 PM to host the University of Northern Colorado, looking to bounce back quickly and build off the energy of tonight's late rally.
