LOS ANGELES – The No. T-8 Lions trailed 6-3 before scoring seven consecutive goals and never looking back in their win over No. 19 San Diego State to open Golden Coast Conference play. The Lions outscored the Aztecs 10-2 over the final 19 minutes of play to win 13-8.
San Diego State opened the game with two goals in the opening two minutes.
Emison Styris cut LMU's deficit in half with her first of the game. After the visitors pushed back up by two, Styris converted a penalty shot to pull within one and
London Boyd followed with a game-tying goal with 3:12 to play in the first. SDSU added one with 1:25 to play in the period to take a slight, 4-3, edge after one quarter.
The Aztecs built their largest lead of the game after opening the second quarter with two goals to push ahead 6-3. Coming out of a called timeout,
Cianne Benjamin scored back-to-back goals to bring the deficit down to one. With less than a minute to play in the half,
Chelsea Isaac tied the game at 6-all to even the score at intermission.
LMU's third quarter opened with the first four goals to push the Lions ahead 10-6.
Anna Tarantino and
Noa Sasover each scored two goals apiece during that stretch. After San Diego State scored one back, Isaac converted a powerplay and Tarantino scored her third of the period to push the lead to 12-7.
Sophia DeMattia extended LMU's lead to 13-8 with 3:42 to play in the game. The Aztecs added a goal in the final two minutes, but the lead held as LMU won their 17
th consecutive regular season conference game under Head Coach
Ikaika Aki.
Madison Searle made 11 saves in her GCC debut to go along with an assist in her 32 minutes in the cage.
LMU will host Fresno State on Saturday at noon at Burns Aquatics Center.
